Footnotes from THE FUTURE

In class on July 28, 2011 at 8:03 pm

We covered a lot of ground today. Here are some things we might want to refer back to:

Joel Klein’s Atlantic Article.

ENO stuff: What ENO’s music sounded like in the early 70s. Here he is with Roxy Music (he’s the one beating on the massive synthesizer in feathered shoulderpads). Oblique Strategies.

The least wanted song ever, decided by survey.

Lifehacker: Best RSS readers.

Tagcrowd.

Delicious.com/activitystory (my public bookmarks).

How to Save Searches to RSS In ProQuest Databases.

Modafinil is real, y’all.

Did I forget anything?

If you’d like to watch the documentary Google: Behind the Screen again, it is available free to watch at Google Video (where else!).

For more information on the advanced Google operators we looked at during class, check out Google Guide and Google’s own Advanced Search Help.

Searching, Finding, Evaluating, Sharing

In class, readings on July 27, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Today we followed up on those fake sites we looked at yesterday and talked about how we can make decisions about the origin, validity, and credibility of what we find– even for sites that aren’t obviously fraudulent. Call it Crap Detection 101.

We also dug into the conceptual side of search mechanics, and, of course, the librarian lugged a bunch of books in to make a point about how we should think about search the digital age. We talked about the findability of desired results, and had search vocabulary lesson.
